Photo Competition

We are pleased to be helping the Leicestershire Historic Church Trust on their 50th Anniversary.  Chris Jones from LeicesterPhoto has a great deal of interest in our church buildings and has completed (nearly 140) churches in Leicestershire and Rutland. He has also been invited to speak at various conferences in the last few years with the Church Tourism Association and The Historic Religious Buildings Alliance with regard to new technology for churches.

The Leicestershire Historic Church Trust celebrates its 50th anniversary of helping protect and conserve Christian architectural places of worship and with the Leicester Mercury has created an opportunity for photographers to enter their images.

Trust chairman Janet Arthur said: “We are very excited about the competition – it’s the first of a series of events to celebrate our 50th anniversary which will lead up to a thanksgiving service at St James the Greater on September 28.” Leicester Mercury chief photographer Andy Baker said: “In competition entries, I am always looking for something which stands out, whether it be something creative with light effects, capturing a special moment or from an unusual angle. “It will be interesting to see what our readers send in this time – they always manage to come up with the unexpected.”

The competition has two categories – reflection and community. For the reflection category, people are asked to photo their favourite place for reflection. For the community, take the time to capture the people in a church or chapel. Ask them a question to support your photo, and tell their story.

Photographers can submit a total of six images which can be for one or both categories. Photos need to be at least 1mb in size, involve a church or chapel in Leicester or Leicestershire, and have been taken in the 12 months before the closing date, which is midnight on Monday, June 30. Judges will be Andy Baker, Janet Arthur and Chris Jones.

There are cash prizes of £100 and £50 for first and second place, donated by LeicesterPhoto, with the pictures also being featured in a 2015 calendar to raise funds for the Churches Trust.

They must include the photographer’s name, address and a daytime contact number. Normal Mercury competition rules apply. Entries should contain the word ‘churches’ in the subject box and be e-mailed to:
