Churches should be always open............
An easy statement for me to make I suppose but these buildings should be available for people to visit and enjoy whether for prayer or out of interest or curiosity.
l know many people can now view our churches through this website - that is not the main intention. It is to encourage them to visit and enjoy the monuments, architecture, history and peace of these fine buildings for themselves.
This is difficult as so many are now locked and Leicestershire performs poorly in having so many churches not open compared to Rutland. Can Leics do better?
I would like to think that we can, and that is why on this page you will find resources and information on how to open your church as well as downloadable leaflets and links.
Lastly if you are opening your church even if its just for the weekend then please report it below and I will gladly update the information.
The 'Open Churches' leaflet was devised by Canon Philip Norwood on behalf of the Gartree Mission Partnership.
National Churchwatch encourages all churches to be open during daylight hours so that they can continue to be a dedicated space for public worship and a focus for events and community activities. We work with dioceses, police forces and other groups to give churches the confidence to deal with any crime issues they may have.
We also believe that clergy, volunteers and church members should be safe whilst following their vocation so we offer training courses in personal safety to help them deal with any threatening situation they may face. This website provides information and advice on tackling and preventing crime in your church.
The Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust was formed in 1964:
To give grants to to help repair the historic churches and chapels of Leicester and Leicestershire that are open for public worship
To encourage wider interest in them
To raise funds for these purposes
While its main task is to provide money and advice for the repair of churches and chapels, the Trust also seeks to spread interest in and knowledge of church and chapel buildings, and to generate enthusiasm for their care and preservation.
Ecclesiastical support open churches and you can find information here at the Churchcare site supported by them and the Church of England.
